Eagle Scout candidate Zach Newman took on a project that blended practical improvement with deep respect for community history. His work focused on the breezeway of the Sarpy County VFW Post 9675, a transitional space that had seen years of Nebraska weather and heavy use by veterans and community members alike.
The breezeway, situated between buildings at the post, had fallen into disrepair over time. Zach’s project began with a careful reconstruction of the window framing, which had become weathered and structurally unsound. This phase required both precision and planning, as it preserved the original character of the structure while reinforcing it for the future.
After the structural updates, Zach led a team in power washing the exterior, removing years of grime from brick and siding to reveal the original colors and textures. The project concluded with a thoughtful refresh of the building’s signage, including sanding, priming, and repainting the lettering that welcomes guests and honors those who have served.
While modest in size, the breezeway is a space of quiet passage and gathering—used during ceremonies, everyday visits, and moments of reflection. By restoring it, Zach not only improved the post’s appearance but helped preserve a piece of local history that continues to serve veterans and their families.
His efforts reflect the core values of Scouting: leadership, service, and stewardship of shared spaces. The breezeway now stands as a small but meaningful symbol of intergenerational respect and care—a Scout honoring the legacy of those who served before him.
